The Dyson DC28 Animal is an upright vacuum cleaner for pet owners. The trademarked Airmuscle technology combines three types of cleaner head.
The three cleaner heads used in Airmuscle technology are:
- the pneumatic actuator (pulls the cleaning head to the floor for better suction)
- a powered cam (to raise and lower the motorized brush bar)
- a high-torque clutch (provides cleaning power)
These three work together to clean all floor types, and are especially good at lifting pet hair.
The DC28 Animal gives you fingertip control over your cleaning, and thanks to the powered cam which raises and lowers the brush bar, it features automatic adjustment of the brush bar depending on the type of floor you are cleaning. The brush bar will also switch off if the floor type dictates that as the best solution.
As with other models, the Dyson DC28 Animal uses the “Root Cyclone” technology to swirl the dirt into the bin without clogging and loss of suction.
The Cyclone technology working together with the HEPA filters in the machine also ensures that the air that is expelled out of the vacuum is much cleaner than the normal air you have in you house.

There have been only a handful of reviews at Amazon as I write this. Only 8 customers left comments with an average rating of 4 out of 5. Some of the negatives in these reviews include:
- Heavy to move up and down stairs and some people found it difficult to maneuver, preferring a Dyson Ball model instead of the DC28 .
- Need to empty the canister a lot (but then this might be a positive since it indicates the vacuum cleaner is doing a good job!).
While some of the features that customers liked include:

This vacuum really is the bees knees. Fantastic suction, great accessories and really gets my dogs hair up from the carpet. My only complaint is that it is not a Dtson Ball vacuum
I just bought this vacuum at Sears and absolutely love it. I’ve previous had the Hoover Windtunnel which faired well in Consumer Reports, but this vacuum is hands down the better. I had vacuumed my family room carpet several times with the Hoover and then went over it with the “Animal” and it quickly filled the container with dirt and hair. I couldn’t believe all the hair that must have been embedded in the carpet. The carpet was much more plush as well as cleaner after vacuuming. The machine is easy to use. I love the push buttons for carpet height and bare floors. I also love how easy it is to empty the bin into the trash. Just push a button on the top and it empties out the bottom. I was able to do my entire stairway with the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs although the hose is rather stiff (probably because it’s still so new). The vacuum is well built and thoughtfully created. Good quality materials. Its not a light vacuum but I believe it’s not so because it uses good quality materials that are heavy by nature. Lots of suction! Easy to assemble right out of the box. Great piece of engineering!

I have the dyson 28 animal. I like my vaccumm but now having a problem. It cleans really well. I went to pull the bar out of the handle the other day to reach some dirt where the vacuum was too big to go. The handle is stuck in there. I have tried to fiddle with the little catches or whatever you call them but to no avail. Mt hubby did something the other trying to gett out, and out it came np. I used it and put it back in the handle when down, went to pull it out again in the kitchen and there it is stuck again…….any ideas? I dont think for the money that this should be happening. I dont feel I should have to take it in when they dont even fix them here anymore at sears or ship it back. I have two rotties and they shed lots. I cant be without a vaccum. Any suggestions would be appreaciated. Maybe there is something I dont know and you do? Hope so. ty
I love it when it works, but from day one the blinging red light always goes on.We would just clean the brush bar & it would be fine.Last week the brush bar light went back on [again] & we took the WHOLE thing apart & can not find anything wrong!!So i can’t use the vacuum because it will not work.I called Dyson & they said we will have to pay $75.00 [to ship] so someone to LOOK at it or drive the vacuum 45 min. to drop it off somewhere… it’s only 6 mon. old & I paid 600.00+ dollars for it.I think I’m DONE w/ dyson!
It is fine, not great for some of the longer pile (shag) carpets that are being reintroduced.
If you can get it on sale with free shipping….go for it.
The dyson 28 animal really helps in a house with both a dog and a cat. I think of all the models I’ve reviewed, this one is my favorite, even if it doesn’t have the “ball”. I do wish it was easier to clean out the roller, as long pet hair does tend to get wrapped up quickly and thickly in there.
